TT and I have the Hungry Mungries. We’re hunting for yummy valentine candy.
I squish-plop plop toward the church.
TT yells, Stop! What’s that white thing in the bushes? Maybe it’s candy!!
I follow a sobbing sound and spy a white paper heart on the ground.
A tiny voice whispers, “I’m the wrong color heart. Nobody wants a white heart. I’m a reject!” “I’m a throw-away. A girl threw me away! She wanted a red or pink heart. I’m a Valentine Reject; the wrong color!!
“You’re lace is beautiful.” I pat the heart gently. “Wait right here. Please don’t cry just because you’re different.
My friend Tony is sitting on the park bench nearby. I wiggle up to him and lick his wrinkled hand. I run toward the white valentine, then I run back.
Stubb, I guess Tony has the idea. He’s up and leaning on his cane. If he falls we’ll never get him up!! Here comes the slow mover!
Tony picks up the valentine.”What a pretty heart! A white heart is different. I like it! It’s been years since I’ve had a valentine!”
The little heart sighs.
I whisper, “I told you so!”
Tony smiles. “I’ll keep this heart, and use it as a marker when I read my book at night. Thanks, Stubb!”
TT is giggling. I hope Tony has some treats. He usually does.
He gives me a cookie with white frosting and red hearts. I bark a thank you, and squish-plop in a circle.
“TT, everyone is happy now and you are smiling!”
Kids, enjoy your candy and cards. Don’t forget to give a hug.
Remember, being different is okay.
